A Guide to securing a job in Traffic Management
As the economic situation in the UK remains unpredictable, some may be looking to shift their career into a different sector, a sector which is likely to remain unaffected due to the demand for workers. If this sounds like you, a role in traffic management could be the change you are looking for. After all, work on dysfunctional roads is always necessary no matter what the economic situation is. But how do you get a job in traffic management in the UK? This article will walk you through working in this industry, it will describe everything you will need to start work as a traffic management operative and where you can gain the qualifications required.
Like any job role, working in traffic management comes with both advantages and disadvantages, the only disadvantage we can think of is working outside when the weather isn’t at its best. However, in our opinion the good points listed below far outweigh the negatives:
- Working outside
- Avoiding a sedentary lifestyle by being physically active throughout the day
- Working in an industry which is constant and not usually affected by changing economic conditions
- Flexibility in being able to choose your own shifts and areas of work
- Opportunities for career progression and development
- Being paid on a weekly basis
To get a job in the traffic management industry you will be required to complete a Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course or TTMBC for short. This is your entry ticket into traffic management, and it will introduce you to the basics of the role including Health & Safety, risk assessments and traffic management terminology/equipment. All training is delivered in partnership with LANTRA who are the leading award body for land-based industries in the UK. MAC Projects has its own LANTRA Centre with a 100% pass rate. Here at MAC Projects HQ in Newcastle we hold several face-to-face TTMBC courses each month. Training at our head office also gives you a chance to meet our TM Operations Team who will be able to answer any questions you may have about the role. By using the following link, you can book onto our course. The course will take around 4hrs with a 20 multiple choice questions at the end. Once you’ve passed and we have registered you on our system, you can start working immediately.
What happens after your initial course?
Once you have passed your TTMBC, you will be sent out to work on the roads. During this time, you will gain experience across our network and you will have the opportunity to work on all different types of TM works. This will give you an idea of the direction you want your career in TM to go. Our LANTRA Centre not only delivers TTMBC, we also deliver follow on courses so you can advance your career in traffic management. We will support and guide you along the way to make sure you don’t miss out on any training or any opportunities to further your career in TM. You can attend courses that discuss working on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways, low speed temporary traffic light works, mobile lane closures, convoy working and much more.
